Bangladesh opened their WC 2021 Super 12 campaign against Sri Lanka. Mohammad Naim and Mushfiqur Rahim hit half-centuries, but Charith Asalanka struck a 49-ball 80* to help Sri Lanka chase down 172 in the 19th over. In their second game, England crushed them by eight wickets, while, two days later, they suffered a final-ball defeat to West Indies at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. South Africa and Australia crushed Bangladesh in their last two games of the tournament.

The 2014 WC winners made a promising start after a five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the Super 12 opener. Chasing 172, Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa added 86 runs for the fifth wicket. David Warner was back among the runs to inflict Sri Lanka their first defeat in the tournament. Back-to-back sixes in the last over from David Miller saw Sri Lanka lose a thriller against South Africa, and Dasun Shanaka's men put up a valiant fight against England in their third and fourth games, respectively. Meanwhile, batters helped them end their campaign on a winning note against West Indies.
