Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea brought festive cheer to their fans by claiming three points in their respective fixtures on Boxing Day. We recap results from English Premier League Gameweek 19.
Arsenal destroy Norwich
Bukayo Saka grabbed a brace, while Kieran Tierney, Alexandre Lacazette, and Emile Smith Rowe, too, netted in Arsenal's 5-0 thrashing of Norwich City. It was another convincing performance from Mikel Arteta's men, who have now won four matches in a row in the league. Martin Odegaard had a memorable outing as the Norwegian assisted two goals. Meanwhile, Arsenal's arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur eased to a 3-0 win over ten-man Crystal Palace at home. Harry Kane, Lucas Moura, Son Heung-Min were the goalscorers.
A nine-goal thriller at Etihad Stadium
Manchester City held off a dramatic fightback from Leicester City to seal a ninth successive league win. A stellar start from the Manchester outfit saw them take a staggering 4-0 lead within the opening 25 minutes. Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan, and Raheem Sterling were on the scoresheet. Leicester, who conceded two penalties in the first half, scored thrice after the break. However, goals from Aymeric Laporte and Sterling sealed a thrilling 6-3 win for the league leaders. Leicester striker Kelechi Iheanacho bagged two assists and scored the Foxes' third goal.
Lukaku steers Chelsea past Aston Villa
Chelsea beat Aston Villa 3-1 courtesy of another penalty brace from Jorginho and a Romelu Lukaku goal in the second half. The Blues, who are now level on points with Liverpool in the points table, went behind in the 28th minute. However, six minutes later, they equalized through Jorginho. Lukaku produced an excellent performance in the second half. The Belgian headed home Callum-Hudson Odoi's cross to register his first league goal since September. He also won a penalty in the injury time.
Liverpool fixture postponed
Premier League postponed the Liverpool-Leeds United fixture after a few positive covid-19 cases emerged within the Leeds first-team squad and staff. Liverpool, who defeated Leicester City in the League Cup quarter-finals on Thursday, are placed second in the table. Meanwhile, Manchester United will face a relegation-threatened Newcastle United on Tuesday.
