South America’s biggest sporting carnival, Copa America, will kick off at the Mane Garrincha Stadium on Monday (in India). The 47th edition, hosted by Brazil, was pushed back for a year due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Brazil is the defending champions after a 3-1 win over Chile in the final of the 2019 edition. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi-captained Argentina finished third.
Teams
The tournament has been a 12-team affair – ten South American nations and two invitees – since the 1993 edition. But a busy international calendar forced Australia and Qatar to withdraw from the continental competition. The ten teams are divided into two groups of five teams each.
Group A (South Zone): Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia
Group B (North Zone): Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela
Fixtures
Brazil, Venezuela face each other in the inaugural match of the 2021 Copa America. It will be a stern test for Argentina in their opening two games as they lock horns with Chile on June 15, and, four days later, the two-time world champions face Uruguay. The knockout stages will begin on July 3, and the final is on July 11.

From Lionel Messi to Vinicius Junior, the biggest names in world football will be turning out for their respective nations in the tournament. Argentina announced a full-strength squad, while their arch-rivals Brazil, too, will have all their superstars available for the 2021 edition. However, Chile is likely to miss the services of Inter Milan forward Alexis Sanchez. He has been included in the squad but will not be available for group stage fixtures.
