Group F will host three of the most tantalizing fixtures in the group stage of the Euro 2020. 2018 World Cup winners France, three-time champions Germany, defending champions Portugal, and Hungary make up the Group of Death. The four teams were unbeaten in the group stage and progressed to the knockout rounds in the Euro 2016.
France had an excellent outing in the qualifiers, winning eight out of their ten matches. The Les Bleus continued to impress as they topped their group in the ongoing Nations League. They picked up 16 points from six games thanks to victories over Portugal, Croatia, and Sweden.
Germany won seven of their eight fixtures in the qualifiers. Joachim Low’s men scored 11 goals in two games against Estonia and crushed Northern Ireland 6-1 in their final match. The Germans failed to progress to the last four of the 2020-21 Nations League. They had to settle for a second-place finish in Group 4.
After a stuttering start, Portugal clinched five wins in their last six matches to qualify for Euro 2020. The Cristiano Ronaldo-led side also finished second in their group in the Nations League. It was a neck-and-neck fight with France for the top spot, but a 0-1 defeat at the hands of the world champions ended Portugal’s hopes.
Hungary is the only team in the qualifiers to have finished fourth in their group and still managed to grab a Euro 2020 ticket. In the playoffs, they eased past Bulgaria and edged Iceland 2-1 in the final. The Magyars were outstanding in the Nations League as they topped Group 3, consisting of Russia, Serbia, and Turkey, in League B.
With four best third-placed teams earning a place in the knockout stages, France, Germany, and Portugal could all qualify from Group F. Neutrals will be hoping that Hungary, who made it to the Round of 16 in the 2016 edition, can spring a surprise and make the group even more exciting.
