Five key stats from Bangladesh's victory over New Zealand

By Parameswaran Sankaranarayanan January 5, 2022

Bangladesh thrashed reigning world Test champions New Zealand in the first international fixture of the new year. It was a collective effort from the visitors, who clinched an eight-wicket victory on the fifth day. The Asian outfit, who had grabbed a 130-run lead in the first innings, bowled out New Zealand for 169 thanks to Ebadot Hossain’s 6/46. Four batters struck half-centuries for Bangladesh, while off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up three wickets and made a vital 47 in the first innings.

Here are five key stats from the opening Test match.

A rare away win

The thumping victory in Mount Maunganui was Bangladesh's sixth win away from home in Test cricket. It was also their first-ever win in SENA countries. In 2009, a 95-run victory over West Indies in Kingstown saw them register their first away triumph in red-ball cricket. A week later, they sealed the series with a four-wicket win. Bangladesh have also won Test matches in Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

16-match unbeaten streak

New Zealand suffered their first home defeat in four years. The world Test champions had won 13 of the last 16 Test matches played on home soil before the first Test match against Bangladesh. The 16-match unbeaten streak included series victories over West Indies, England, India, Pakistan, etc.

Bangladesh batters thrive

Bangladesh’s first-innings score of 458 was the fourth time they managed to record 400-plus total in New Zealand. Under Mushfiqur Rahim’s captaincy, the Tigers had scored a mammoth 595 in Wellington in 2017. They have posted 400-plus twice in Hamilton. However, they lost all three Test matches.

Ebadot takes six

Ebadot Hossain recorded the second-best bowling figures by a Bangladesh fast bowler in Test cricket. The 27-year-old picked up the key wickets of Devon Conway, Will Young, Ross Taylor, etc., and finished with figures of 6/46 in the second innings. It was also the first time since 2013 a Bangladesh pacer claimed a five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Conway joins special club

Devon Conway became only the sixth player to score a hundred in debut Test innings at home and away. The left-hand batter, who scored a double century on his Test debut at Lord’s, top-scored for New Zealand in the first innings with 122. Harry Graham, Kepler Wessels, Azhar Mahmood, Andrew Strauss, and Michael Clarke are the five others who have hit a ton in their maiden Test innings at home and away.
