Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is one of the most dominant and successful teams in the world’s biggest T20 competition, the Indian Premier League (Indian T20). The Chennai-based team has been captained by India’s most successful captain in history, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and can be deemed as the second-most successful team in Indian T20 after Mumbai Indians.
While in Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings have a captain which all other teams desired but could never have, the team also has had some of the biggest names in world cricket playing in the yellow colour. Regarded for his stoic attitude and determination along with supreme leadership skills, New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming has remained the CSK coach for the last 14 editions and there is no sign of the Kiwi to be walking away soon.
Over the years, Chennai Super Kings have had many famous and successful cricketers playing vital roles for them. Among the overseas players include New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum, Tim Southee, Mitchell Santner, and Scott Styris; Australia’s Michael Hussey, Matthew Hayden, Ben Hilfenhaus, Dirk Nannes, Doug Bollinger, George Bailey, Shane Watson, and Josh Hazlewood; South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, Justin Kemp, Chris Morris, Albie Morkel, and Imran Tahir; West Indies’ Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith and Jason Holder and England’s Andrew Flintoff, Mark Wood, Sam Billings, David Willey, Moeen Ali and Sam Curran.
The Indian contingent in CSK has been one of the best across teams. They have had some of the biggest Indian names in Ravichandran Ashwin, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Lakshmipathy Balaji (now their bowling coach), Parthiv Patel, Kedar Jadhav, Ambati Rayudu, and Shardul Thakur to name a few.
Chennai Super Kings is only the second team after Mumbai Indians to have won more than 100 matches across all 14 editions of the Indian T20, while they were absent for two seasons ― in 2016 and 2017 ― owing to a ban imposed by India’s apex court.
Chennai Super Kings returned to the T20 extravaganza in the year 2018 and lifted their overall third title, which helped them equal their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in terms of most title victories. The first two title wins for CSK came in Indian T20 2010 and Indian T20 2011, while they also won the now-defunct Champions League T20 two times in 2010 and 2014.
Chennai Super Kings are known to have the best win percentage among all eight Indian T20 teams. CSK have made it to the Indian T20 knockouts in every season they have played in, barring 2020, when they underperformed to such an extent that the Dhoni-led side crashed out of the tournament in the league round itself. Chennai Super Kings have also played the most number of Indian T20 finals ― their last qualification for a final was in 2019, which was their overall eighth in 10 seasons.
