A game of rummy is used as a sign of celebration during festivals when family and friends get together to enjoy different card games. The Indian rummy has plenty of variations, allowing everyone to pick their favourite version, play, and enjoy. This card game is so simple to understand that even beginners can get started with a few tips and tricks. Rummy is usually played between 2 to 6 players.
Indian Rummy Rules
There are 3 main variants of Indian rummy, points rummy, pool rummy, and deals rummy. Rummy is played with a standard deck of cards having 4 different suits. The rules for all Indian rummy variants are the same, but they differ in gameplay. The objective is to make the required number of valid sets and sequences using all the 13 cards at hand. Once you are done with melding the cards as required, you can declare and win the game.
To win a game of rummy, you need to make at least two sequences, out of which one should compulsorily be a pure sequence. The first step when you get the cards is to form a pure sequence, as without it you cannot make a valid declaration.
Pure Sequence in Rummy
A pure sequence in rummy is an arrangement of 3 or more successive cards off the same suit. The point to note here is that you cannot use a joker to form a pure sequence. There is no valid declaration without a pure sequence, so focus on forming a pure sequence first.
When you sort the cards, make sure that you have at least one group that is a pure sequence or a possible pure sequence. Following are a few examples of pure sequences for your better understanding:
Example 1: 3♠️-4♠️-5♠️-6♠️ (Pure sequence with 4 consecutive Spade cards).
Example 2: 7♦️-8♦️-9♦️ (Pure sequence with 3 consecutive Diamond cards).
Example 3: 5♥️-6♥️-7♥️ (Pure sequence with 3 consecutive Hearts cards).
You have to be smart and proactive while grouping the cards in valid sets and sequences. As a rummy player, you must be aware of all the cards in hand and make sure that you don’t discard a valuable card. This awareness will come with more online rummy games practice.
How to form Pure Sequences in Rummy?
The key to win a rummy game is to form a pure sequence quickly followed by other sets and sequences. Following are a few rummy tips for beginners to form a pure sequence and reduce points in hand:
- Make sure that you don’t use joker cards or wild jokers in a pure sequence. As per rummy rules, the sequence with a joker would be considered as an impure sequence.
- A wild card can be used to form a pure sequence only when it belongs to the same suit and is a part of the series.
- Sequences can be made using face cards, low point cards, or high points cards.
Let us consider an example of forming a pure sequence using one player who is playing the round with his opponents.
Player:
Dealt Cards: Q♥️-10♣️-J♣️-K♣️-8♠️-6♦️-8♦️-6♠️-3♥️-2♥️-5♦️-7♠️-A♥️
Sorted Cards: 2♥️-3♥️-Q♥️-8♦️-6♠️-7♠️-8♠️-5♦️-6♦️-10♣️-J♣️-K♣️-A♥️
Player 1 has sorted the cards such that they can form pure or impure sequences in the upcoming rounds. The 2♥️-3♥️-Q♥️ is an impure sequence with Q♥️ being a wild joker. There is a pure sequence 6♠️-7♠️-8♠️ and two probable future pure sequences or impure sequences, 5♦️-6♦️ and 10♣️-J♣️.
Impure Sequences in Rummy
When forming a pure sequence, you must also know what makes a sequence an impure sequence so that you can avoid mistakes. An impure sequence is an arrangement of 3 or more consecutive cards of the same sequence where the joker is used.
Example 1: 6♦️-7♦️-Q♠️-9♦️ - This is an impure sequence as there is a series of diamond cards where Q♠️ is a wild joker used as substitute for 9♦️.
Example 2: 4♣️-5♣️-PJ-7♣️ - This is an example of pure sequence where PJ is used as a substitute for 6♣️.
