Cricket fans across the globe will be gearing up for the Indian T20 League 2022 Mega Auction. The two-day bidding war, one of the most exciting pre-Indian T20 League events, is an opportunity for the franchises to build a solid base for the upcoming seasons.
What is a Mega Auction?
The Indian T20 League Mega Auction, organized by the Indian cricket governing body, is a player auction that takes place once in three years. The franchises will be allowed to retain a few players ahead of the mega auction. They have to fill the rest of their squad, which has a limit of 25 players, during the two-day event.

Indian T20 League 2022 Mega Auction
The 2022 Mega Auction will be held on February 12 and 13. A total of 590 players across 14 countries will go under the hammer in Bengaluru. The addition of two new franchises will intensify the battle to snap up some of the most exciting capped and uncapped cricketers.

2022 Mega Auction Retained Players
Franchises were allowed to retain four players - a maximum of three Indian players - in the 2022 season. Chennai and Bangalore retained the services of MS Dhonii and V Kohlii, respectively. Punjab released all their overseas players, while Hyderabad named two uncapped players in their retention list. New franchises Lucknow and Gujarat were allowed to sign three players before the mega auction.

2022 Mega Auction Base Prices
From ₹2 crore to ₹20 lakh, there are six base prices in the mega auction. D Warner, S Dhawan, K Rabada, R Ashwin, etc., opted for the highest base price. Meanwhile, a host of international players set their base price as ₹50 lakh.

2022 Mega Auction Absentees
C Gayle, B Stokes, M Starc, S Curran, K Jamieson, and a few other overseas players didn't register their names for the mega auction. The ‘Universe Boss’ hasn't missed a single Indian T20 League season since his debut in 2009. Meanwhile, Stokes decided to skip the upcoming season after a disappointing Ashes tour.
2022 Mega Auction Purse
The Indian cricket governing body has set a salary cap of ₹90 crore for the ten franchises. Punjab will have the most money in their purse - ₹72 crore - in the mega auction as the franchise retained only two players from last season. The likes of Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai have splashed more than ₹40 crore.
