Inter Milan ended a nine-year Juventus dominance to lift the 2020-21 Italian Serie A trophy. It was an eventful season for Antonio Conte’s men as they managed to bring home the trophy after 11 years. Inter, who suffered a group stage exit in the Champions League, trailed to arch-rivals AC Milan by two points in February. However, they won eleven games in a row and sealed the title with four games remaining. The Italian Serie A winners had a sensational run at home, winning 17 of the 19 matches.
AC Milan, too, had something to celebrate at the end of the season. One of the most successful clubs in European football secured a top-four berth for the first time since 2012-13. They went unbeaten in the opening 15 games and led the table at Christmas. Though, defeats at the hands of Inter Milan, Napoli, Lazio, etc., saw them lose their grip at the top of the table. Milan beat Atalanta 0-2 on the final day to grab their best finish in nine years.
2019-20 Champions League quarterfinalists Atalanta had yet another successful Italian Serie A campaign. They sealed a spot in Europe’s top club competition for the third time in a row. The Lombardy-based club struggled early in the season and seemed to miss out on top-four. But nine wins from the last 12 games helped them finish third in the points table. Atalanta fans would be hoping that the club can challenge for the title in the upcoming season.
Chasing a tenth consecutive league title, Juventus ended up fourth and could have missed out on a Champions League place had Napoli won their final fixture. The Old Lady dropped plenty of points in the opening half of the season. They drew with promoted sides Crotone and Benevento and lost to Fiorentina and Inter Milan. Also, Juventus claimed just seven points from the six matches against the top-four sides.
Napoli and AS Roma would have been disappointed after ending up fifth and seventh, respectively. It was the second successive season in which Napoli failed to qualify for the Champions League. Roma, meanwhile, finished seventh for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Relegated teams: Benevento, Crotone, & Parma
