Spinners set up Trent Rockets (TRT) a seven-run win over London Spirit (LNS) in a low-scoring thriller at Lord’s, in match 10 of the Hundred. It was their third successive victory in the tournament. Opener D’Arcy Short hit an unbeaten half-century, while spinners bagged all 12 wickets to fall in the match.
Trent Rockets made a cautious start after being put into bat first. Alex Hales, dropped by Mohammad Amir in the fifth ball of the match, took Roelof van der Merwe to the cleaners and scored successive fours off Mohammad Nabi. But the Afghanistan all-rounder had his revenge as he sent the Englishman back to the pavilion immediately after the powerplay.
The visitors suffered a double blow when Dawid Malan and Samit Patel departed in the space of 16 balls. With wickets falling at regular intervals, they struggled to put together a decent partnership. Short kept the scores ticking and hit five boundaries in the last seven balls to steer his side to a healthy total.
Matthew Carter and Samit Patel wreaked havoc as they grabbed three London Spirit wickets before the powerplay. Things got worse for the London-based franchise as Carter trapped Denly in front of the wicket, and Rashid Khan removed Ravi Bopara for 7, leaving them at 48/5 after 50 balls.
Morgan and van der Merwe reignited London Spirit’s hopes after scoring 16 runs off Short. However, a twin strike from Patel swung the pendulum Trent Rockets’ way. He clinched the wickets of Morgan and Chris Wood in successive balls, thanks to some outstanding catching from Luke Wood and Carter.
With London Spirit required 26 runs from 10 balls, van der Merwe hit two fours and a six in the first six balls. But Marchant de Lange made an excellent comeback, conceding just two runs in the final four deliveries. The home side fell short by seven runs.
TRT 123/4 in 100 balls (D Short 69, A Hales 21; M Nabi 2/20)
LNS 116/8 in 100 balls (R van Merwe 25*; M Carter 3/17, S Patel 3/20)
Player of the Match
Short and Carter were the standout performers for Trent Rockets at Lord’s on Thursday. The Australian batted with maturity in a spin-friendly track. He rotated the strike well, and the late blitz – 24 runs off seven balls – made the difference. Off-spinner Matthew Carter, too, had a terrific outing. The 25-year-old’s first ten balls put the pressure right back on the hosts. He also took a sharp catch in the slips to remove Chris Wood.
