The Hundred: MNR vs SOB Preview

By Parameswaran Sankaranarayanan August 5, 2021

Manchester Originals (MNR) will take on Southern Brave (SOB) at Old Trafford cricket ground in match 19 of the Hundred. After a convincing win over Welsh Fire, the hosts will be hoping to pick up two points at home. They have five points from four games and are third in the points table. Southern Brave will be high on confidence after winning their last two matches. Both the matches went to the wire, but the Southampton-based franchise kept their cool to clinch crucial points.

Team News

The hosts are likely to field the same playing eleven that beat Welsh Fire last week. Simon Katich, the Manchester Originals head coach, will be happy that the top-three in the batting order managed to find runs in the seven-wicket victory over Welsh Fire. Joe Clarke struck a 31-ball 58, while Colin Munro and Phil Salt, too, registered their highest scores in the tournament.

Tom Hartley had impressed with the ball as he dislodged the openers and conceded just 11 runs in 15 balls. Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson had a decent outing on his debut, but Steven Finn and Carlos Brathwaite conceded a combined 66 runs in 40 balls. Spinner Matt Parkinson has claimed a four-wicket haul the last time played at Old Trafford cricket ground.

Southern Brave will have to make one change in the playing eleven as Devon Conway has made way for Ireland opener Paul Stirling. The New Zealand batsman suffered an injury on his left hand while batting against London Spirit. It would be interesting to see whether Stirling, who scored 43 runs against South Africa in the three T20Is, will make his debut tonight.

With Conway ruled out for the rest of the tournament, Southern Brave is unlikely to leave Colin de Grandhomme out of the playing eleven. The all-rounder made an unbeaten eight with the bat but went for 24 runs in the first set of five against London Spirit. Meanwhile, Alex Davies, dismissed for a duck thrice in seven innings at Old Trafford cricket ground in Vitality Blast 2021, will be keen to impress with the bat again.

The Southern Brave bowling line-up is likely to remain unchanged from the last game. Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills were terrific in the death overs, and George Garton made key breakthroughs at Lord’s. The spinners Jake Lintott and Liam Dawson bowled economically. Also, Quinton de Kock’s contribution was immense. He took a stunning one-handed catch and ran out Blake Cullen in the penultimate ball of the match.
