Veteran India pacer Jhulan Goswami has a new record on her name - the 39-year-old became the leading wicket-taker in the ODI Women’s WC after removing West Indies spinner Anisa Mohammed in the group stage fixture at Seddon Park on Saturday. Goswami, who made her international debut in 2002, overtook Australia spinner Lyn Fullston's tally of 39 wickets. She is also the third Indian cricketer after Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan to reach 40 wickets in the 50-over WC.
A memorable debut
Goswami made her international bow in the ODI series against England at home. It was a debut worth remembering as she dismissed opener Caroline Atkins and ended the match with the figures of 2-15 in seven overs. The then 19-year-old also grabbed a three-wicket haul and the player of the match award in the next game.
Records & accolades aplenty
The tall pacer has created and broke plenty of records over the last two decades. In 2006, she became the first Indian women's cricketer to bag a ten-wicket haul in Tests after figures of 10-78 against England in Taunton. Goswami, bestowed with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2012, is the leading wicket-taker in women’s ODI with 249 wickets. She remains the only player to have crossed 200 wickets in the women’s 50-over format.
