the basic rules of online rummy are the same as offline
Online rummy too is played with a deck of 52 cards and 1 printed joker. The cards are ranked from 2-10, and there are 4 high-value cards, called the Ace, Jack, Queen, and Joker, each containing 10 points. There will be 13 cards of different ranks in each of the 4 suits - Clubs, Diamonds, Spades, and Hearts.
Once each of the players (2-6 at each table) is dealt his/her cards, the remaining cards will be placed face-down. This is the closed pile or draw pile. One card will be picked at random and set facing upwards. This will form the discard pile or open pile. This card is also designated as the cut joker. All cards of the same rank from all 4 suits will also become cut jokers.
Now, to win an online rummy game, you will have to arrange your cards into sequences and sets. The first one to do so following all the rules of online rummy wins.
Tips For Beginners To Discard The Right Cards
Rummy is a game of skill and strategy, and if you use the right tactics, you can easily win this game. One of the best ways you can win this game is you know which cards to discard at which time. If you are new to this game, here are some tips to help you understand which cards to discard during rummy:
- Keep Odd Cards At The End
You need first to arrange your hand in rummy and keep all the cards that you can make a sequence with. The odd cards you can keep at the end. Arranging your cards beforehand will ensure that you do not discard the wrong cards.
- See What Your Opponent Is Doing
You have to keep an eye on your opponent and see what cards they are picking up from the open pile. You should also see what cards they are discarding so that you have an idea of their hand. This will give you ideas on what cards you should or shouldn’t discard.
- Do Away With High-Valued Cards
You should get rid of the cards that are of high value as soon as possible. This is because if you lose the game, your cards’ value will be counted, and these high-value cards will add up against you. Although the Joker cards are of no harm, it is up to the player if they want to discard the Joker cards when not required or use them wisely to save more points.
- Fool Your Opponents
You must learn how to bluff in rummy to fool your opponents. You can do this by discarding cards that will make them think you have a different hand. For instance, if you have 3, 4, and 6 spades, you should discard the 6 spades. This will make your opponents think you don’t need 5 spades, and they will discard it. You can then use the 5 spades to form a sequence.
- Keep Your Hand Hidden
Lastly, you must keep your hand hidden from your opponents by picking a card from the stockpile and not from the open deck. If you pick a card from the open deck, your opponents can guess what hand you are making. But in the stockpile, all the cards are hidden, so your opponent will not know what you are picking up.
These tips can help beginners discard the right card at the right time to strategize and win the game of rummy.
using the discard stack
You can utilize the discard stack as a strategy to win. Not many online rummy players pay attention to the discard stack. If you are such a player, it is time for you to focus on the open stack.
This is where every player will discard his/her card when the turn comes to that player.
Cards we discard during an online rummy game indicate our strategies. We give up the cards that we do not need while forming valid sequences and sets. So, when a player discards a certain card, you will know that the card will not help him/her form the desired sequence or set.
That should give you an idea about which cards your opponents need. And, if you have those cards, you can hold on to them and lower their chances of winning.
You can also discard cards from your hand to mislead your online rummy opponents by keeping an eye on the cards they discard.
The discarded cards in online rummy will also help you decide which cards you can safely discard yourself. For example, if your opponent discards a 7 of Spades, then you can discard your 6 or 8 of Spades safely if they are not needed. You will know that you are not giving away a card that your opponent needs.
Strategy For Intermediate Players: How To Discard The Right Cards
In rummy, the winning player has a total score of zero. The rest of the players will get negative points for the unpaired cards in their hands. So, if you have all high-value cards, you will end up getting a lot of negative points. Thus, it is necessary to know when to discard cards at the right time if you are an intermediate player and want to play like a pro soon. To help you out, use the following tricks:
- Discard High Cards Strategically
The higher the value of the cards at the end, the more negative points you will get. Therefore what you should do is wait for three or four turns and if your high card is still not forming a sequence, then discard it. You can even wait and see if any card from the discard pile can help your high card form a sequence. If not, then remove it in the next round.
- Calculate Your Points At Every Turn
You must calculate your points after every turn so that you can see how much your total score will be. If your unpaired cards are increasing your total to a high value, then you should discard them. For instance, suppose you have this hand at present:
- Queen of Spades, King of Spades, Printed joker forming an impure sequence
- 4 of diamonds, 4 of clubs
- 9 of diamonds, 10 of diamonds
In this turn, your negative points will be of the two unpaired hands, that is, the 4 of diamonds and 4 of clubs, as well as the 9 of diamonds and 10 of diamonds. This will add up to 4+4+9+10=27.
Thus, you know that you can get rid of the 9 diamonds or 10 diamonds in the next turn to reduce your penalty points.
- Use Middle Cards Wisely
The value of middle cards is calculated at their face value. For instance, if at the end of the game, you have only 3 Spades that are unpaired, then 3 will be your penalty point. You can use middle cards to form pure sequences or sets and lower your penalty points. For instance, suppose you have a hand with the following cards:
- 3 of hearts, 4 of hearts, 6 of hearts, 7 of hearts
- King of diamonds, K of hearts, K of clubs
- 2 of spades, 4 of spades
- Ace of clubs, 7 of clubs, 9 of clubs
In the first case, if you pick or get a 2 or 8 of hearts, you will create a pure sequence. The 2 of spades and 4 of spades need a 3 of spades to form a sequence. The last row needs 8 clubs to form a pure sequence. This means that you can use the middle cards to form sequences and then discard the Ace of Clubs in the next turn. Therefore it is good to keep the middle cards for as long as you can to form sequences.
